President’s Message

Hello ASCE Members,

Welcome to the American Society of Civil Engineers San Bernardino-Riverside Branch (ASCE SBR Branch) web page. I’m excited to announce this year we will revamp the look of the website. Whether you’re interested in monthly luncheons at the Riverside Convention Center, golfing, networking in the profession, technical development, K-12 outreach, community service, social events, or sports we have it all, definitely something for you to get involved in!

Our monthly Branch Board meetings are held on the first Friday of the month at TKE in Riverside and are open to everyone if you would like to join. The next board meeting is on January 5, 2018. The Younger Members meetings are held the first Wednesday of the month and are open to everyone as well, so please come along and introduce yourself.

A friendly reminder the ASCE membership dues are due this month. I highly encourage you to check the box for Los Angeles Sec-San Bernardino-Riverside Branch Dues of $55 which directly goes to our Branch to support all the awesome events we put on throughout the year.

ASCE’s mission is to provide essential value to our members and partners, advance civil engineering, and serve the public good. In carrying out our mission, ASCE advances technology, encourages lifelong learning, promotes professionalism and the profession, develops civil engineer leaders, and advocates infrastructure and environmental stewardship.

Tell us how the branch can best serve you in your professional development. If you have any comments or suggestions, please contact us by Clicking Here.

Thank you for your continued support and commitment to ASCE.

Younger Member Forum

The ASCE San Bernardino/Riverside Younger Member Forum (SB/R YMF) provides an opportunity for young civil engineers to become familiar with the civil engineering community and get involved in ASCE early in their careers. Our goal is to capture the enthusiasm we all had as college students and build a coalition of successful young engineers.

The Mentorship Committee was formed to add value to ASCE membership in Southwest Riverside Country and to address local issues encountered in that region. The Group provides a forum for networking during lunchtime seminars and presentations which occur on a quarterly basis.

Report Card

NEW 2017 Report Card for America's Infrastructure

The ASCE Committee on America’s Infrastructure, made up of 28 dedicated civil engineers from across the country with decades of expertise in all categories, volunteers their time to work with ASCE Infrastructure Initiatives staff to prepare the Infrastructure Report Card. The Committee assesses all relevant data and reports, consults with technical and industry experts, and assigns grades using the following key criteria:

  1. Capacity
  2. Condition
  3. Funding
  4. Future Need
  5. Operation and Maintenance
  6. Public Safety
  7. Resilience
  8. Innovation

The 2017 Infrastructure Report Card reveals that we have made some incremental progress toward restoring our nation’s infrastructure. But it has not been enough. As in 2013, America’s cumulative GPA is once again a D+.

The 2017 grades range from a B for Rail to a D- for Transit, illustrating the clear impact of investment – or lack thereof – on the grades. Three categories – Parks, Solid Waste, and Transit – received a decline in grade this year, while seven – Hazardous Waste, Inland Waterways, Levees, Ports, Rail, Schools, and Wastewater – saw slight improvements. Six categories’ grades remain unchanged from 2013 – Aviation, Bridges, Dams, Drinking Water, Energy, and Roads.
